If you're looking for reasons why you should Walk Against Warming on Sunday and call on our politicians to take real action on climate change, here are a couple of facts to ponder.
- The year to date has been the warmest since temperature records began (NASA and NOAA).
- In 2010 an astounding 17 countries have recorded their highest ever temperatures. 2010 has also set a record for the most countries to experience record high temperatures.
- Commenting on an "Unprecedented sequence of extreme weather events" (the heat wave in Russia, floods in Pakistan and China and the largest chunk of ice to break off one of biggest glaciers in Greenland since observations began) the World Meteorological Organization stated
"Climate extremes have always existed, but all the events cited above compare with, or exceed in intensity, duration or geographical extent, the previous largest historical events".
and that
"the sequence of current events matches IPCC projections of more frequent and more intense extreme weather events due to global warming"
Climate change is not off in the future, it's happening today and it's time we did something about it. So come along tomorrow and make yourself heard.
